Brentwood Borough is a suburb of Pittsburgh located in Allegheny County, The borough consists of 929.9 acres or approximately 1.5 square miles. Brentwood currently has an estimated population of 10,000 citizens. The Brentwood Borough School District is comprised of two elementary schools for grades K-5, and a combined middle/high school for grades 6-12. The district currently serves an estimated 1,250 students.
Brentwood Borough School District presents “Acres of Makers” (formerly Art in the Park) – a celebration of local makers, artists, writers, musicians, film-makers, engineers, and more. What was once known to the community as the District’s Art in the Park, organized by high school art teacher Ben Miller, is expanding this year to showcase more of Brentwood’s maker spirit with a celebration highlighting what Brentwood students and community members are contributing to Pittsburgh’s city-wide maker initiative.
Join the celebration on Thursday, May 18th and discover what students from kindergarten through 12th grade are creating. From manufacturing and prototyping, to woodworking, product fabrication, robotics, writing and artwork – see our students as designers and transformers with bright futures. You can also attend a musical experience from the District high school chorus.
With the encouragement of the District, Brentwood’s teachers have created an exciting atmosphere where STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) learning and interdisciplinary thinking and creating is championed.
Artists and event producers from Handmade Arcade, Pittsburgh’s award-winning independent craft fair, will lead a variety of hands-on learning activities designed for makers of all ages and backgrounds. Attendees will participate in innovative craft-based projects, while also considering the role of craft and creativity in their own lives, learning about handmade, locally-produced goods and processes, and enjoying a shared creative process in a welcoming and inclusive setting. Participants will also hear the latest updates about Handmade Arcade and will learn about exciting new opportunities for young and emerging makers, such as Youth Scholarships and Hands-on Handmade volunteer positions available for their December 2017 event at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
A family-friendly event, experience Brentwood’s creativity and feel inspired to create something of your own.
