About this event

Learn about the history of photography, how a camera works, how to shoot a proper photo, explore careers in photography, enjoy a short photo walk, tour a media department, and get a coloring book of your images.

Overview

In this program, the participants will be learning about the basics of photography such as how a camera works, the exposure triangle, framing, and different styles of photography as well as what careers are available in the field of photography. After the completion of the class instruction/demonstrations, the participants will then have the opportunity to go on a photo walk along a predetermined route at the Summit Bechtel Reserve to take pictures and apply the skills they have just learned in the photo course. Following the conclusion of the photo walk, the participants will make their way to the SVC where they will get to see how the media department works, what they do, and see some of the items that they are working on or have done. Additionally, the photos that they took will be uploaded and processed into a coloring book for them to take home the same day. During this process the media department will explain and demonstrate how that process happens.

In Classroom

Participants will be learning about the basics of photography such as how a camera works, the exposure triangle, framing, and different styles of photography as well as what careers are available in the field of photography.

To begin the lesson, a brief introduction to photography and its origin will be given. This will be followed up by how a camera works from talking about the shutter to the aperture of the lens. After completing instruction about how the camera works, we will Segway into talking about the exposure triangle and how each piece plays an intracule roll in taking a photo. Following the exposure triangle, we will then cover framing and how important it is for creating a picture. We will primarily focus on the rule of thirds but will hit on leading lines as well. Finally, we will cover the different styles of photography and as well as how they work with the exposure triangle and we will look at the various occupations available in photography.

Out of Classroom

We will proceed to go on a photo walk around the Summit Bechtel Reserve (route TBD). During this time, participants will be able to take photos of the Summit and see part of the site. Following the photo walk, we will proceed to the Scott Visitor Center to visit the media department. They will get to see how the media department works, what they do, and see some of the items that they are working on or have done. Additionally, the photos that they took will be uploaded and processed into a coloring book for them to take home the same day.
