About this event

Join the staff for a virtual tour of the Penn State research reactor, the only one in Pennsylvania and the longest operating licensed reactor in the country. Learn about findings related to historical projects in Historic Saint Mary’s City and Amelia Earhart’s airplane. Find out how the facility simulates space conditions for testing and learn about facility research projects.

The mission of The Penn State Radiation Science and Engineering Center (RSEC) is, in partnership with faculty, staff, students, alumni, government, and corporate leaders, to safely utilize nuclear technology to benefit society through education, research, and service.  The RSEC was established to manage Penn State’s nuclear facilities including the Breazeale Nuclear Reactor, Gamma Irradiation facilities, radioactive sources and radiation measurement resources.  The Penn State Breazeale Reactor (PSBR) which first went critical in 1955, is the nation’s longest continuously operating university research reactor.
