Schools That Can reimagines education through real-world learning, helping students realize real-world success

Schools that Can (STC) Chicago is helping Chicago’s youth prepare for a rapidly changing world with a Design Day Challenge, encouraging students to engage with their community and raise their voice in the construction of their new outdoor space. Monroe Elementary School students will work together in teams to collaboratively and creatively design their own solutions for this wonderful new space, with certain criteria in place that will emphasize public use and service to the city of Chicago. Students will use a collection of materials (including 3D objects, modeling clay, and paint) to design a solution to this challenge in one day. The nature of the challenge itself is kept secret until the day of the event to encourage on-site collaboration and creativity. Students will present their solutions to a panel of industry experts and will be assessed not only on the quality of the solutions but on the presentation as well. This design challenge aims to develop skills students need to succeed and thrive in our changing world. Students will practice critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills while engaging in a design thinking process. Each team of students is sponsored by a local business or organization that sends volunteers to serve as members of the team. The day will end with a celebration from to meet the students, see the final designs, and celebrate real-world learning!
