About this Event
The Sewickley Public Library is thrilled to collaborate with Ivy Smith, the Youth Poet Laureate of Allegheny County, to lead two inclusive, hands-on haiku workshops for students of the Watson Institute and the Quaker Valley School District.
Sewickley, Pennsylvania, occupies a special place in history. As the site of the Watson Institute, Sewickley hosted the first clinical trials of Dr. Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine in 1952—trials that led to widespread inoculation and near-eradication of the disease worldwide. During a tempest of mass disability institutionalization and contagion hysteria, Dr. Salk’s child patients and their families showed a remarkable courage and resilience that saved their lives and countless others. And it is their heroism that the Sewickley Public Library will honor during Remake Learning Days.
Partnering with the Watson Institute and the Quaker Valley School District, and collaborating with Ivy Smith, the Youth Poet Laureate of Allegheny County, the Sewickley Public Library will present inclusive, hands-on poetry workshops that teach of the life-saving efforts of Dr. Salk and the Watson children and inspire the poetry of present-day Watson and Quaker Valley students.
Step into a powerful chapter of local history and discover how courage, science, and storytelling changed the world.
