About this Event

Get ready for another exciting Remake Learning adventure! Join local nature detective and herpetologist, April Claus, and the Beaver County Library System for an unforgettable stream ecology expedition in Brush Creek. Discover the unknown... with your libraries!

Ages 7 and Up

Join The Beaver County Libraries for an exciting adventure exploring the fascinating world of Brush Creek!

This hands-on program will immerse you in the wonders of water ecology as we delve into the life teeming within Brush Creek. Led by experienced local naturalist and herpetologist, April Claus, this creek critter hike is designed for curious minds of all ages (7 and up).

What to Expect:

  1. Creekside Exploration: We’ll begin with a short introduction to stream ecology, learning about the interconnectedness of plants, animals, and the water itself.
  2. Critter Catching Techniques: April will guide participants on safe and responsible methods for capturing aquatic invertebrates such as macroinvertebrates (like insects, snails, and crayfish). We’ll provide all the necessary equipment, including nets, trays, and magnifying glasses.
  3. Observation and Identification: Using field guides and our own observations, we’ll identify the fascinating creatures we encounter. Learn about their unique adaptations and the important roles they play in the creek ecosystem.
  4. Citizen Science in Action: We’ll contribute to valuable scientific data by recording our findings using a citizen science app or data sheets. This helps scientists monitor the health of our local waterways.
  5. Creekside Stewardship: We’ll discuss the importance of protecting our waterways and explore ways to minimize our impact on the environment.

Why Participate?

  1. Hands-on Learning: This is a unique opportunity to experience the wonders of nature firsthand.
  2. Develop Important Skills: Participants will enhance their observation, identification, and scientific inquiry skills.
