About this Event
This family friendly program will introduce attendees to the importance of beavers in our ecosystem through an education session and hands on activities.
The Vernal School, in collaboration with Susquehanna University’s Freshwater Research Institute, is hosting an educational program designed to inform families about the vital role of beavers in the ecosystem. This hands-on learning experience aims to deepen participants’ understanding of beaver ecology, their impact on freshwater habitats, and their importance in maintaining biodiversity. Families will gain a newfound appreciation for these industrious creatures and their contributions to environmental sustainability.
The educational program hosted by the Vernal School and Susquehanna University’s Freshwater Research Institute is designed to be both informative and interactive. Families participating in the program will engage in a variety of activities that highlight the ecological significance of beavers.
Informative Presentation
The program will begin with a multimedia presentation led by freshwater ecology experts from Susquehanna University. This session will cover beaver biology, their natural behaviors, and their historical and present-day impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Participants will learn about the ways in which beavers contribute to water conservation and habitat restoration, as well as the challenges they face due to habitat loss and human-wildlife conflicts.
Hands on Activities
One of the most engaging aspects of the program is the hands-on stream table demonstration. Families will have the opportunity to construct their own miniature beaver dams using natural materials. This activity will allow participants to observe firsthand how beaver dams influence water movement, sediment deposition, and habitat formation.
