About this Event
Bring the family along to learn about the amazing role of fungi in our natural world! In Sandall Beat Wood, we will undertake some hands-on learning about the magical power of nature, create and decorate wooden and paper mushrooms, and contribute to a 'wood wide web' mural!
Gather at Sandall Beat Community Environment Centre to focus on one of the most overlooked and underappreciated parts of our natural environment: fungi. No need to book just come along and join us!
Fungi plays a crucial role in regulating and recycling nutrients in soil particularly through biodegrading matter and supports many other species of plants and trees by engaging in nutrient exchanges with them, making them great mascots for how we too can replicate a circular economy and choose kindness to those in our own immediate environments.
We will be hosting multiple activities in a circuit for attendees, which includes:
- An identification activity of common mushrooms and those with peculiar names.
- Textured, hands-on learning around the mycelium mulch being used to support newly planted trees and save money through using the power of fungi.
- Arts and crafts activities to:
- make and colour own mushroom outlines with pens and collage to take home or display in the Environment Centre.
- paint wooden mushrooms to decorate the sensory garden at the Environment Centre to create a legacy.
- create a mural on the ‘wood wide web’, an underground network of fungal threads (hyphae) linking fungi to nearby trees. The hyphae feed in the soil, swapping extra nutrients they collect for sugars from the tree. This helps both the fungi and the tree to grow.
