About this Event
Join us for an exciting 30-minute hands-on experience where children explore AI and Machine Learning by training a micro:bit to recognise their own movements!
AI on the Move
This learning event introduces children and young learners to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine
Learning (ML) through hands-on activities with the micro:bit CreateAI platform. Participants will learn how
AI-powered models work by training their own motion-based machine learning models using the micro:bit
accelerometer. This activity is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical AI concepts and real-world
applications in an engaging and interactive way.
In this 30-minute per group ( 4 hours in total ) activity the children will have:
● Introduction to AI & Machine Learning: Brief discussion on how AI and ML work in daily life
(e.g., fitness trackers, smart assistants).
● Hands-on Experimentation with micro:bit CreateAI:
○ Connecting micro:bit V2 to the CreateAI web tool.
○ Collecting movement data using the micro:bit’s accelerometer.
○ Training a Machine Learning model to recognize different movements (e.g., waving, clapping,
jumping).
○ Testing and improving the trained AI model.
● Coding with AI in MakeCode:
○ Implementing ML models into real-world applications using MakeCode.
○ Coding micro:bit to respond to trained movements (e.g., playing a sound or displaying an icon
when a movement is detected).
By the end of the activities,, participants will:
● Understand the basics of AI & ML and how they are used in real-world applications.
● Learn how to train a machine learning model using real-time movement data.
● Develop computational thinking skills by analyzing and improving AI models.
● Strengthen coding skills by programming the micro:bit to interact with their AI models.
● Improve problem-solving and critical thinking by troubleshooting ML models and adjusting their
data inputs.
Activity is accessible and inclusive:
● No prior coding experience needed: The activity is designed to be beginner-friendly with
step-by-step guidance.
● Hands-on, interactive learning: Participants will work in small groups to ensure engagement and
support.
● Multi-sensory approach: Incorporates visual coding (MakeCode), physical interaction (motion-based
ML), and real-time feedback (live graphs).
Activity targeted at:
● Age Group: 8-12 years old (flexible for beginners in AI and coding).
● Skill Level: No prior experience needed, ideal for beginners interested in AI, coding, and STEM.
