The Remake Learning Days festival returns to Chattanooga for the third year, bringing hands-on and engaging learning to Tennessee families from May 12-21.
The Public Education Foundation (PEF) and the City of Chattanooga are proud to be a part of the Remake Learning Days Across America again this year, and they have great things planned: From maker events and STEM nights to coding events and electric race cars, there’s something for everyone.
Chattanooga is among the most revitalized cities in the country with rapidly growing arts, tech-startup, and outdoor adventure communities. The city prides itself on community maker spaces in libraries and the world’s fastest gigabit internet throughout the community, as well as the largest school-based Fab Lab network in the world (HCS eLabs).
This year’s Remake Learning Days events include plenty of STEM fun. Among the highlights: two days of STEM School Design Challenges. Students are participating in four main design challenges: BBC Microbit’s “do your :bit” Challenge, Toy Hacking for Adaptation, Auto-regulated Greenhouses, and Equity in Education Design Challenge, all sponsored by local businesses and Chattanooga State Community College instructors. Each group will prepare a video explaining their solution to the design challenge and how they made their prototype.
During the festival, students can also check out the SCRATCH Hackathon and “An Evening with STEM,” where they can compose their own music using computer coding, learn about science in the kitchen, test parachute designs, take a virtual field trip to the Body Exhibition, and more.
A number of Chattanooga’s events, such as this Innovation Showcase, also give students a chance to showcase what they’ve been accomplishing. And several events, like the STEM Fellows Poster Session at PEF and a Python coding event for teachers, focus on adults in the community.
“It’s exciting to see that this year, Chattanooga and many of the other regions have events where kids are discovering new ideas while also showcasing what they’ve learned and created,” says Remake Learning Days Across America co-producer Yu-Ling Cheng. “These public showcases help young people build a sense of pride in their own capability and let them see the pride their community has at all the ways they’re learning.”
