About this Event

7th grade students from the Philipsburg-Osceola School District investigate abandoned mine drainage (AMD) and its impact on local waterways. They will explore hands-on activities as students test water quality, learn about treatment methods, and use art and writing to advocate for environmental change.

Join 7th grade students from the Philipsburg-Osceola School District for an interactive STEAM experience focused on the impact of abandoned mine drainage (AMD) in Philipsburg, PA. Much of the AMD in our region is the result of mining practices prior to 1977, before the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed. Today, AMD remains the second largest source of water pollution in Pennsylvania—and the leading cause in Philipsburg.

During this event, students will share their investigations into local water quality by measuring acidity levels and testing for aluminum and iron released from abandoned mines. They will also examine the physical, chemical, and biological components of nearby streams to better understand ecosystem health.

Attendees will engage in hands-on activities that demonstrate both active and passive water treatment methods currently used in the area. In addition to scientific exploration, students will collaborate with a local author to create posters and write letters to legislative representatives, combining science, literacy, and the arts to advocate for environmental awareness and change.

This event highlights student-driven inquiry, community connections, and the power of STEAM learning to address real-world environmental challenges.

This event is by invitation only, intended for just the 7th grade students.
