About this Event

Join us for a fun, hands-on family challenge inspired by the picture book '365 Penguins', where we’ll build a penguin-filled display together while exploring maths through stories, creativity, and play - and work as a team to reach our goal of 365 penguins!

Join us for a fun, creative series of workshops where we explore maths through storytelling!

Inspired by the picture book 365 Penguins, we’ll follow the story of a family who receive a penguin every day for a year — and have to work out what to do with them. Along the way, we’ll discover how maths can be playful, practical, and part of everyday life.

Across three sessions, we’ll work together to build our own penguin-filled world. We’ll listen to the story, share ideas, and get hands-on by creating a cardboard house and filling it with penguins of all shapes and sizes. As we go, we’ll explore simple maths concepts like counting, sorting, shape, and measuring in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

We’ll also keep track of our progress with a fun “penguin counter” as we work towards our goal of making 365 penguins together!

The project will take place across three days in different community locations. In the final session, we’ll bring everything together in a public space, where our penguin display will be open for everyone to see and celebrate. There will also be a chance to drop in, join the activity, and help us reach our 365 penguin goal.

These workshops are open to all ages, especially families. No experience is needed — just curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to join in.

Everyone who takes part will also be entered into a free prize draw to win a selection of maths-themed story books.

Come along, get creative, and discover how maths and stories can come together in surprising and exciting ways!
