About this Event
This hands-on program offers young explorers the opportunity to dig into the past and uncover fascinating fossils while learning about the region’s prehistoric history in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
The Vernal School in collaboration with the Central PA Rock and Mineral Club is hosting an exciting Junior Fossil Hunt on Tuesday, May 20th, in the fossil pit of Montour Preserve. This program is designed especially for early elementary-age students and preschoolers. This hands-on program offers young explorers the opportunity to dig into the past and uncover fascinating fossils while learning about the region’s prehistoric history in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
The event will begin with a short presentation introducing children to the basics of fossils. Topics will include an explanation of what fossils are, how they are formed, and what types of fossils can be found at Montour Preserve. Using visual aids and hands-on samples, students will gain an understanding of how these preserved remains help scientists learn about Earth’s past. Children will be able to look and touch real dinosaur bones, megalodon teeth and other fossils from around the world.
After the presentation we will fossil hunt together in the fossil pit. Each participant will have the opportunity to collect and take home a few fossil specimens.
Please bring your fossil hunting tools if available, if not, please let us know. We have a limited amount available to lend.
