About this Event

Learn about where food comes from, create a make-and-take project and sample food grown right here in York.

Kids and families are invited to spend a day connecting with nature and creativity at York Fresh Food Farms. This hands-on learning experience invites school-age participants to explore how plants grow from seed to harvest while discovering the importance of healthy soil, sunlight, and water. Guided by farm educators, students will walk through growing spaces, learn how vegetables and flowers are planted, and see firsthand how food is cultivated in an urban farm setting.

Participants will dig into the basics of gardening by preparing soil, planting seeds or seedlings, and learning simple techniques they can use at home. Along the way, they’ll discover how farms support healthy communities by providing fresh, affordable produce and green spaces for learning.

After exploring the farm, creativity takes root during a fun make-and-take activity. Each participant will design and build a small planter or garden ornament using natural and recycled materials. Whether decorating a container for herbs or crafting a unique garden decoration, students will leave with something meaningful they created themselves — and something that reminds them to keep growing.

By the end of the visit, participants will not only understand how plants grow but also feel confident starting their own small gardening project at home. This interactive farm experience blends science, creativity, and outdoor discovery, making learning both memorable and fun while inspiring the next generation of growers.
