About this Event
The Junior Solar Sprint, a STEM education and engagement event, is open to all middle school students and 9th graders in the Philadelphia region. Students design, build and race model solar cars and compete for awards in speed, artistic, technical and sustainability merit .
The Junior Solar Sprint is held on a Saturday in late spring, and draws more than 100 students, parents, siblings and friends, from schools across the region. The race is held on the Drexel Quad, at 31st and Market Streets.
Drexel University partners with PSEA to engage its students as volunteers, helping to expand the event to reach many more schools. PSEA members, including solar professionals, engineers, artists, and others volunteer hundreds of hours every year to host this valuable public education event.
This video provides a good sense of the event.
The Solar Sprint has inspired hundreds of Philadelphia-area youth to pursue advanced education and careers in the sciences over the past 20 years. PSEA is especially proud of the diversity of participants. Our message promoting clean, renewable energy is extended to hundreds of spectators, as well as parents, teachers, and friends who report on social media on how they succeeded in making a solar-powered car! All schools, public, private, and even home schools can participate.
