Connect with urban nature by taking part in the 2024 City Nature Challenge.
Between April 26 and April 29, 2024, Philadelphia and its adjacent counties will be competing against other cities in the world to see who can engage the most people to find the most species in their regions. If you are interested in contributing and helping Philly win, download the iNaturalist app (or visit the website) and start documenting the wildlife in your area.
Anyone can take part in the City Nature Challenge individually, as part of a classroom project, or by taking part in a local event such as a nature walk or bioblitz. You can observe wildlife (plants, animals, fungi, slime molds, and more) in a park, on school grounds, on a city block, in a garden or yard – wherever you find it.
The City Nature Challenge is a decentralized event. There is no single place or session being held. As long as you use iNaturalist to record an observation of wildlife (any living thing that is not a pet or cultivated) from April 26 through April 29 in Philadelphia or its neighboring counties, you are taking part. This offers educators the opportunity to craft their own City Nature Challenge Events. See the Educator Toolkit for more.
