Read & Create: Run, Little Chaski! Leer & Crear: ¡Corre, Pequeño Chaski!

Come look, listen, and create with us! We welcome families with children in PreK-5th grade to learn about Inka culture and make some Inka-inspired art of their own. In this bilingual pre-recorded program, you will listen to a reading of “Run, Little Chaski! ¡Corre, Pequeño Chaski!“ the new book by author Mariana Llanos and illustrated by Mariana Ruiz Johnson. This story tells the tale of little Chaski, the Inka King’s newest royal messenger who must deliver an important khipu before the sun goes down! Learn about khipus, a device that records and conveys information across both time and distance and create your own using materials from home. Pre-recorded videos will be available in English and Spanish language.

In this interactive session, participants will explore WideOpenSchool (https://wideopenschool.org), a free resource, launched by Common Sense that provides curated, high-quality resources (both digital and offline) in a variety of subjects to educators and families. Join us as we explore free resources to support core subjects like math, social studies, and science and also family fun activities, virtual field trips, and resources to remain active throughout the summer. Participants will leave with a list of personalized, curated resources to enrich and support learning that they can use immediately.

Think & Create: Mosaic Mirror

Explore a Wari Mosaic Mirror inspired by animals and nature! In this two-part program, you'll observe colors, shapes, and lines and learn about the significance of animals in Andean art and culture. Then, make a mosaic using your own materials that can easily be found at home (e.g., cardboard, paper, pasta, beans, rice, beads, stones, shells, leaves). This program is part of the Think & Create family program series featuring close-looking at art from Dumbarton Oaks’ world-class collections with Harvard Project Zero Thinking Routines and hands-on activities.
